Prayer for Gods Will,

We have a group home for recovering addicts and alcoholics and have been in operation for 37 months. The home that we own is a historical house that the previous owner had reasonable accommodations from the city to allow him to operate. The home has 5 bedrooms, and 5 bathrooms each room has its own bathroom. We have in this house 2 people per room with the manager having his own room. On the back of this house, the city allowed the other owner to build a one-bedroom apartment. We have a mother and her two children, a three year old, and a five year old that occupy it.

Also we went to the city due to a code enforcer threatening to throw my wife in jail if we did not get a license by the next day. When we went to the city to get the license the person took us to the code enforcement office where a person said “We don’t want your kind in town move 5 miles in any direction”. The city has put a cap on the amount of people that they will allow to live here at only six total, house and apartment.

I know the Mormon Church helps people with disabilities so why do they want to put the people out on the street?

Isabelle... They?? Who is "They" It appears that you are referring to three or more possible targets One the specific family that you call neighbor (I suppose because of closeness in geography to you) Two The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (not the members) or Three All members of the Mormon church! To infer that Mormons are Judgmental is like saying you must be Mormon because you live in Utah, everyone knows that all Utahans are Mormons! (Very ignorant to say the least right!)

First, I would start by saying that people are people REGUARDLESS of their religious beliefs. People either choose to act on their beliefs or not! I would be disappointed and feel sorry for the family that would treat you or anyone that way. I would also go so far as to say that it is inappropriate behavior for any Christian, Mormon, (insert label here) to treat anyone like that! Second I would say that it would not take me 1+ years to introduce myself by asking for help to get that response! Also I would not categorize my "neighbors" by religious beliefs, rather I would hope to call them friends and try to find common threads that would serve to foster healthy relations as "neighbors". One such way would be to talk about work, talents, sports, computers, cars, crafts, needlepoint, sewing, cards, games, children, yardwork, service projects (insert hobby/interest here) etc... There are many other ways that do not include sitting at home and counting/labeling who in your neighborhood is good enough for you to associate with based upon perceived religious beliefs. (In fact take religion out of the equation and just focus on being a friend) Finally I would challenge you to go to that "neighbor" and apply the teachings of Jesus Christ by COMPASSIONATELY explaining to him that he has offended you and that you forgive him/them for that! Then I would without hesitation reinforce to him that you want to be his neighbor and would like to get to know his/her family and that you would be that "neighbor" to him as the Savior described. Yes Isabelle, you can be a great influence in their life to help them to be good neighbors through your example!

Ps when Jesus taught about neighbors, it had nothing to do with geography!

I think Al Sharpton is right about the racist background of the Mormon Church, started by Brigham Young, not Joseph Smith. Although I believe current leaders are not as prejudice, the church still needs to apologize for the past treatment of African Americans. The churches current policies of covering things up (lying about its past) does not help the church repent. The Mormon churches current problem with slowed growth, especially around countries where the churches sins are broadcast on every computer in the land (on the internet) is a good indication that it is in the best interest of the church to come clean, and tell the truth at least a little more often. Yes the church does a lot of good, and I hope it can make the changes it needs to.

Amazingly enough the people who live across the street from me are one of only 2 or 3 ( ai m not sure about 1 family) who are LDS. I have lived in this house for 2 years now and the ones I know for sure are LDS don't even look at us. Forget about talking to us. In fact, last year I needed help because my husband travels for work 20 plus days in a row at at time and I am home alone with small kids. I asked my neighbor for help with getting something out of the car because he happend to be standing out in his drive way. I went up to him, introduced myself and then asked him and told him I would buy his family pizza for dinner and he said and I quote " Because you do not attend our church I will not help you and we prefer not to talk to you". What???????? Yes, some are VERY judgemental. I was floored that a neighbor would say that. 2 years later and still although they live directly across the street not once have they ever talked to us and afer my experience in being told to stay away I won't be going over there. So tell me again, they are not judgemental?

You may say they are not judgemental, but I disagree. Why is it that they claim that they are the one true church? And, I do know for a fact that they teach their children that they are not allowed to attend another church. I think it is time for the LDS church to get out of the box and consider that maybe, in fact, that they are not the chosen people.

What Al Sharpton understands all too well, and many mormons turn the other way from, is that racism STILL exists in the LDS church!Look around Salt Lake City! I worked at the Salt Lake International Airport 22 years. When a black (African American), person walked through the airport they stuck out like a sore thumb. Ever been to L.A.? Chicago? New York? Minneapolis? Detroit? Denver? Dallas? Kansas City? Seattle? There is much more balance, and acceptance. Ever wonder why pro basketball players don't want to play in Utah? Ever wonder why Donyell Marshall left a competitive playoff team to join a team who's record was one of the worst in the NBA? And take a paycut to boot? If you're not white, have hair above the collar (males), or have any facial hair, beware! If that isn't cultic, or racist I don't know what is. As far as Al Sharpton coming here I think it was mistake for him. It was like he was apologizing in a subtle way by coming here to meet with quote "LDS leaders." He has nothing to apologize for. Is this not a country of free speech? Was not this country's declarartion and its laws founded on the Bible? Isn't that what Al was saying about Mitt? To most of the world, for Americans not to believe in the God of the Bible is un-American. However, as we who live here know, our country is so far from following God that it is ripe for judgment. I wish there were more men of integrity in this country that would stand up for the truth like Al Sharpton did with Mitt. Truth is never popular. Why do you think Jesus was so hated, and crucified? He told people what they were-- WICKED! They couldn't handle the truth! to qoute Jack Nicholson, from "A Few Good Men." The fact that Mormons, and the media wanted an apology from Al is a pretty good clue he was on to something. It makes vomit to think about the stunt Eileen Walker pulled a few years ago by DEMANDING an apology from the people of Nauvoo for persecuting the Mormons and driving them out. The audacity. Her day of judgment is coming. As she judged Illinois so she will be judged.

Sorry, but you are quite incorrect about Mormon church leaders being non-judgmental. Starting with Joseph Smith saying, and I quote, "All churches on earth are an anbomination before God." If those aren't judgmental words, I don't know what are. And Al Sharpton knows his LDS history alot better than most mormons do, or at least to what they will admit to. Brigham Young's whole life depicted murder, racism, and polygamy. Do your homework! Sad that a University is named after a mass murder in the name of "religion." Maybe that's a clue why so many non-mormons hate BYU?

I agree with Rev. Sharpton, born and raised in utah as a non mormon i know that these people are the most judgmental people on the universe. they have an excuse for every belief that clashes with my religon not a valid arguement.

Ha! I was born and raised here. (as a mormon) I moved away, got out of this bubble. Now am not a believer. Utah needs a reality check. This is not how the real world is.

I see why there are many questions about racism. I don't believe the leaders or the followers are racist. But it does give reason to doubt a faith that is ever changing. With blacks having the priesthood. If someone says that it is the one and only true church... Why change the beliefs? Call a spaid a spaid. Good for him.

There is nothing to be learned from the mormon culture. Except not to be part of it. Since moving to Utah I have never met such people with judgements of others.

Coming from a non LDS standpoint, as much as I disagree with what Sharpton said most " Christians", be it Baptist, Lutheran, Catholic, any of them do agree as far as what he said about the Christian view of God being different from the LDS God is true. We do believe different things. But, thats the beauty of this country, you can believe what you want and freedom of speech means you can talk about it.
