Looks like the Stupidest Movie of all time.   Why dont they try to accuratly pertray the events?   If B.Y. Had ordered the killings, do you really think that the Federal government wouldn't have over run Salt Lake City, and hung Brigham from a street corner?   Sounds like Political B.S. that was created specifically to make Mitt Romney look like a Religious "Crazy Person"

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

Typical Hollywood politics, Mitt Romney happens to be the strongest Conservative candidate for 2008.  think about it, this isn't the first Mormon movie out this year and mark my words, it isn't going to be the last.  There has already been Religious posturing by all the Campaign corners.  No other Candidate is willing to put their faith on the line, when in all actuallity, it is and or really should be what values doyou represent and hold true in order to properly lead this country in a progressive and productive manner that will show true WORLD LEADERSHIP, not just the Presidential office of the GREATEST Country on this planet.  I was raised Catholic my entire life, attended catholic schools all the way into college.  I didn't have the opportunity to be emerged into the Mormon way of life until my adult years, however I do find the values, lifestyle, strong morals, faith and soliderity as well as loyalty to a country that murdered the 1st Mormon leader, Prophet and visionary.  Which brings me to my original point.  John Voight had some pretty strong oppinions about mormons durring the time of the mountain meadow massacre, but its obvious, he limited any research leading up to that time, such as, all the mormons who's farms and property, were stolen, destroyed or burned to the ground as they were run out of  cities, towns and states.  I wonder if he would beinterested in playing the role of Brigham Young in the earlier times of the church, someone should ask him I guarantee, he will say no, because it doesn't serve the liberal, trash and thrash machine they really don't want to see or understand the compasionate and real side of life.  They are truly caught up in their own lime lite, and fantasy world.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

If you want to know the true story of what happened, see the documentary by Brian Patrick "Burying The Past: Legacy Of The Mountain Meadows Massacre."  Sections of the film were shown on tonight's broadcast along with his interview on how he declined to associate his film with "September Dawn."  The documentary "Burying The Past" is a powerful, moving, haunting film that has won 11 awards and covers President Hinckley's dedication of a monument to the victims, how descendants of the massacre are still struggling to heal wounds today, interviews with historians and an investigation of what actually took place September 11, 1857.  Rather than approaching the story with a one-sided attack or agenda as "September Dawn" has done, "Burying The Past" presents all sides and lets the audience decide for themselves.  Patrick has said he made the film to bring people together, and promote healing.  If you want to get a copy of the film you can go to Patrick's website at www.buryingthepast.com

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

Was this report on the movie September Dawn biased?  Let's think about this.  First, the premier for the movie was two weeks ago in Hollywood.  Did the report mention anyone for the LDS church or any news member attending to know if any of them have seen the movie to give a clear opinion of the movie itself?  Second, we had first hand interviews with members of the LDS chuch, but none from the members of the film including the writer.  If she was asked to participate in an interview about the movie and refused shouldn't have this been relayed to the viewing audience? If she was not asked, why wasn't she?  Does the media not want us to hear the writer's intent in this film?  I have heard that the writer took 2 years, I say again 2 years in researching and writing this story!  Now, they say in Hollywood it takes 6 mos to 1 year from beginning of filming to the end product reaching the big screen for final showing.  So, let's say that if we just use the formula here that is 3 years ago the writer started this project because she KNEW that in 2007 Mitt Romney would be throwing his hat into the ring for President of the United States and she wanted to try and put a stop to that? PLEASE!!  Don't we have a little more common sense than that here in Utah folks? The one thing that is a common remark about the actions of the people during the Mountain Meadow Massacre is that they reacted on emotions, by jumping to conclusions on this movie, making accusations, derogatory statements, not hearing from both sides of the issue and not doing our own investigating are we not doing the same thing?  Are we not reliving the past mistakes, maybe with a different out come but still the same.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

The movie September Dawn has engendered a great deal of publicity, much of it along the lines of religion.  However, if a true assessment of what happened at Mountain Meadow is to be had, religion (and politics) must be kept out of it.  What happened at Mountain Meadow in 1857 is not an indictment against Mormons, but against the perpetrators and the leaders who ordered it.  Moreover, it has nothing to do with Mitt Romney.  The event occurred and Mormon leaders were responsible.  The motion picture is no more "history" than the book written by the self-appointed "expert" Will Bagley.  But one fact will remain ever evident to those in the knowledge of Utah history -- nothing ever happened in early Utah (and especially nothing so vital to the fate of the Territory) that Brigham Young was not aware of or did not order.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

Why are all of you getting your panties up in a bunch over a MOVIE? It is just a movie...you have not seen the film yet and you are already judging way too much. It is a true story about what happened to a wagon train of people 150 years ago in Utah. Yes, a lot of people may be related to the mormons who committed that massacre, but that was then and this is now, it was not you. The church does not need to cover up anything else and Mitt Romney should not be would because September Dawn is a movie and it looks like a good one at that. Check out the trailer for the movie, it looks like an interesting film. remember....A MOVIE.

did you not listen to the report it is a historical fiction, more fiction than historical. It is just another lame attempt to make Brigham Young look like the bad guy.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

I remember the guy (an acquaintance) who was all about tolerance and acceptance when the film "The Last Temptation of Christ" came out- how it was an interpretation, how we should accept it for its truth, not its facts, etc.

Then, a few months later, he was outraged by a film insinuating that John Lennon was a closet homosexual, not as gifted a songwriter as we have been led to believe, etc.  This time, the filmmakers should have been investigated for slander, should have done their historical research better, should have looked at the facts available... hmm!

It seems to me that September Dawn, like so many other things, will not so much change opinion but reflect the opinion one already has.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

I have seen the movie.  "September Dawn" is a fictionalized account of the Mountain Meadows Massacre with a love story that takes place between one of the perpetrators and one of the victims.  Part of the storyline revolves around polygamy, as well as christianity vs. mormonism.  Much of "September Dawn" is fictionalized and dramatized, although it is centered around a historical event.  As for the Mitt Romney debate, it is only a lucky coincidence for the producers of "September Dawn" that he happens to be running when their movie is coming out because it will draw more attention to their film and create publicity for them.  Dean Cain, Christopher Cains' son (director/writer of the film) saw Brian Patrick's documentary on Mountain Meadows "Burying The Past" years ago when it played in Hollywood and ordered a copy, and that is most likely where they came up with the idea, although Patrick wasn't included in the making of it, and chose not to be associated with it because it was fictionalized in places from what he said in his interview.  Dean Cain plays Joseph Smith in "September Dawn." You are right that no one interviewed had seen "September Dawn" EXCEPT Brian Patrick, whose documentary footage was also shown on the broadcast with his interview, and who has seen "September Dawn" more than once.  Patrick's documentary contains a forensic investigation of the evidence unearthed at Mountain Meadows and you can't get much more scientific and accurate than that--he has the only footage that exists of the evidence.  If you can handle the truth and truly want to know what happened, it is available to you.  If you want to see "Burying The Past" go to www.buryingthepast.com

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

Another shameless plug by the "so called expert" Brian Patrick to sell more of his documentary...lol...I would call this pathetic, to say the least. I really doubt he has seen the movie and I doubt even more that anyone required his endorsement...lol.

How come everyone opposing this movie has either a book or documentary to sell. If I was going to believe anyone... I would believe Helen Whitney who made the PBS documentary on the Mormons. At least she isn't trying to make a buck.

Re: Share your thoughts on September Dawn and the Mountain Meadows Massacre

I am NOT Brian Patrick.  That's like saying you're Helen Whitney because you defended her. (She is well-paid, by the way, and makes more "bucks" than most people)  Brian Patrick's documentary inspired September Dawn -- that's why they asked to interview him for the piece, and yes, he has seen "September Dawn" as they flew him out to Hollywood and wanted to buy his footage and get his opinion on their film (which you would know had you actually listened to the interview).  The History Channel, independent producers, "September Dawn," PBS, as well as Helen Whitney have tried over and over to purchase his footage for their own use and he has never sold.  For someone who you claim is trying so hard to "make a buck" you'd think he would have sold out to all those people for thousands of dollars.  It must take a lot of integrity not to sell out.  Not only has his documentary won 11 awards and played around the country, he has been invited to show his film to descendants of the victims, as well as descendants of the perpetrators.  I think the fact that both groups have extended invitations to him says all there is to be said, and is achieving in some ways the impossible, and bringing people together.  He is a good man who made the film in an attempt to bring people together and heal these old wounds.  There are many people like me out there who have been moved by Mr. Patrick's film -- perhaps if you had the courage to see it, you might be as well.
