'Now you see it . . . In case you blinked, Terry Wood is no longer the 10 p.m. weeknight anchor for KTVX-TV. It's now Ross Becker. Wood will be confined to the weekend newscasts. I predicted this a few weeks ago and tied it to the anxiety felt by Channel 4's parent company, ClearChannel, over Wood's editorializing against the Bush administration's Divine Strake bomb test in the Nevada desert...At the time, KTVX officials told callers and e-mailers that they supported Wood's actions regarding Divine Strake and news director David Dantuano publicly defended and praised his anchor. So shortly after the station's show of confidence in Wood, he is demoted. It happened right after Wood left for a 10-day vacation. The planned move was kept confidential for weeks, but you can be sure the secrecy had nothing to do with the recent ratings period.'

Semptember Dawn Mountain Meadow Masacre

In response to the movie Semptember Dawn Mountain Meadow Masacre I am disgusted. That movie has nothing historical about it and is all Hollywoods version of the story. This movie is clearly an attack on the Mormons and I find it unnecessary. Why do people feel it is right to make movies and books that make other peoples religions look bad. Just because we belong to different religions and have different views doesn't mean we have to persecute those that are different. Back then Brigham Young never ordered the masacre of those people and the movie protrays this very wrong. The mormons had trekked accross the plains to get away from mobs and persecution not to come here and persecute others. This just comes to show how Hollywood portrays things in the world today. I mean just look at what they are allowing into their movies. Now a days it is common to see smoking, drugs, nudity, and sexual things and it is all being portrayed in such a way that makes it seem it is the only real way to live. Hollywood is just obviously running out of ideas it must seem because they have to resort to comming in finding a story and then making their version of it. I mean what happend to families and good values oh I forgot Hollywood got rid of that too. It is common for Hollywood to portray marriage as just a short term commitment just a fun legal way to get your own personal pleasures. Well all I have to say is way to go Hollywood I find you personally responsible for promoting the degrading and immoral things going on in the world today. So as for the movie It is a totally fiction with nothing to do with the Mormons and what really happened. Hollywood just has nothing better to do with their time then to help degrade, put down and demoralize others so that they can feel just a little bit better about their pathetic lives.

The following is from a Letter to the Editor of the Provo Herald, 2 Oct 2002, signed by Ken Baguley of Elk Ridge.

"...What I know about the Mountain Meadows Massacre is this: My wife's great-aunt Dorothy Cannon Brown, daughter of Frank J. Cannon and grand-daughter of George Q. Cannon -- who was a counselor to President Brigham Young -- told us just before she died in 1970 at age 90, 'I want to tell you this because you willl understand.

'Brigham Young's housekeeper was present when a rider suddenly came from Southern Utah with a message telling of the Missouri people coming through. Asking for advice as to what they should do, Brigham said, 'Go now and tell them to let those people go...and don't spare the horseflesh.'

'Upon the rider's return, the horrible deed was already done. The housekeeper later worked for the Frank J. Cannon family and told her story to Dorothy Cannon.

'If this eyewitness account doesn't tell us of the state of mind of President Young and his attempt to free those people from the subsequent horrible event in history, what kind of a juror would we be if such an event were to occur today?'"

In watching the news tonight the story of Mt. Medows caught my attention, actually it was not the story it's self, it was a question posed after the feature regarding Mitt Romney. The fact that he is LDS should not matter in the race for President regarding history that happened over 100 years ago that he had nothing to do with . He has proven himself as a good leader as far as Utah goes. He has proven that he understands that politics and church each have thier seperate places. If his fellow presidential hopefuls choose to make an issue of the history of his chosen religion, in my opinion they are obtuse and grasping for straws. There are far more important issues that they should be focusing on, this would be a trivial issue...

People need to have their own minds and be open minded in something as important as electing a suitable president to run our county...

Was the Report Biased?

Was this report on the movie September Dawn biased? Let's think about this. First, the premier for the movie was two weeks ago in Hollywood. Did the report mention anyone for the LDS church or any news member attending to know if any of them have seen the movie to give a clear opinion of the movie itself? Second, we had first hand interviews with members of the LDS chuch, but none from the members of the film including the writer. If she was asked to participate in an interview about the movie and refused shouldn't have this been relayed to the viewing audience? If she was not asked, why wasn't she? Does the media not want us to hear the writer's intent in this film? I have heard that the writer took 2 years, I say again 2 years in researching and writing this story! Now, they say in Hollywood it takes 6 mos to 1 year from beginning of filming to the end product reaching the big screen for final showing. So, let's say that if we just use the formula here that is 3 years ago the writer started this project because she KNEW that in 2007 Mitt Romney would be throwing his hat into the ring for President of the United States and she wanted to try and put a stop to that? PLEASE!! Don't we have a little more common sense than that here in Utah folks? The one thing that is a common remark about the actions of the people during the Mountain Meadow Massacre is that they reacted on emotions, by jumping to conclusions on this movie, making accusations, derogatory statements, not hearing from both sides of the issue and not doing our own investigating are we not doing the same thing? Are we not reliving the past mistakes, maybe with a different out come but still the same.

This is a worry filled time for you. And for that, we parents cannot express enough compassion for you. There is nothing more sorrowful or scary than illness in our children. It makes us feel helpless. We are the ones who are supposed to fix all of childhood's hurts and worries. But we are not helpless. Our hugs and whispered sweet-nothings comfort and heal our babies like nothing else can. Hold on tight to each other every day and night and together you will sail this stormy sea.

It is said that faith moves mountains, but I cannot attest to that. What I do know, and what you should too, is that the dark of night awaits the dawn. Well seems like there is plenty of movies about the massacres there were in the US. But truth be told there hasnt been anyone to come foward when it comes to movies about the massacres to the people who resided on the land before all the wonderful residents of other countries. Your ancestors were the greedy people the perfected the "con" phrase when they stole the homeland of the Native Americans and Hispanic people who lived on this land. We didnt go to your countries giving you deathly illnesses or kill off your families for the land. Your ancestors did that to themselves. But the thing that gets me, is the movies that make my people looking like murderers and how terrible we are. Did you pass on the history to your children how my people were killed. Babies thrown up in the air n shot. Used for their target practice? No, I think not. My great-grandma was young when they were placed on the reservations. She grew up with hate and had no need to learn the english language. But for politcs thats a whole new topic. Thanks to this generation of people we have you to pick and choose who resides in this country!!! A whole new set of idiots to run the country

Do we really expect better? In the long run (and in the short, as well), "September Dawn" won't amount to much. Mountain Meadows was a supreme tragedy, and I genuinely wish that all those responsible had been prosecuted. Such was not the case.

Narratives on Mountain Meadows long ago moved from appeals to justice to commentaries on the truth claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. So let's just be clear - this is not a quest for accurate historical fiction, but a polemic drawn on history. Ah, well... At least Al Sharpton will have a movie to attend in June! JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!

I am a transplant to the area and not a part of the dominant religion in this state. However, I remember last year when the Da Vinci Code came out, and the premise of that movie was hard for Evangelical Christians and Roman Catholics to deal with and yet Hollywood was praised in Salt Lake for Dan Brown's excellent piece of drama that was produced. Was there any books offered to refute that movie by television stations in Utah back then? Don't remember any! Now September Dawn is coming out and the Mormon Church feels attacked. Suddenly the shoe is on the other foot and Hollywood is awful and all of Utah is convinced that it's a conspiracy! Well, let me return the advice that was given to me last year: "It's just a movie! Go and enjoy the storyline and don't get so worked up!"

Why Al, Why now?

Al's visit got me thinking. Thinking about why he really came? Did he need to come? Did he want to come? Was he trying to minimize effect or offense? Or was he trying to gain the spotlight, did his comments get him exactly what he wanted?

Part of me wants to think that this is all an attempt to make amends for a mistake that was made, and the other part of me knows better. It is my hope that at the very least Al gained some knowledge by learning about the Mormon religion/church/faith/belief. But does that knowledge once learned force him to set aside what he already believes? The hard part for Al is that he needs to be two people (public Al and private Al); I just think that he got to comfortable and private Al's comments came out.

Which leads me to think why can't someone be different in his or her beliefs and not offend others by sharing those beliefs. Or why can’t public personalities just state that this is their private belief and call a spade a spade! Is it better to lie and try to cover up in halfhearted explanations and apologies (thanks Mel, Jimmy, Al etc... for the effort) but come on what is wrong with the good old-fashioned truth! What do you think?
