This is a worry filled time for you. And for that, we parents cannot express enough compassion for you. There is nothing more sorrowful or scary than illness in our children. It makes us feel helpless. We are the ones who are supposed to fix all of childhood's hurts and worries. But we are not helpless. Our hugs and whispered sweet-nothings comfort and heal our babies like nothing else can. Hold on tight to each other every day and night and together you will sail this stormy sea.

It is said that faith moves mountains, but I cannot attest to that. What I do know, and what you should too, is that the dark of night awaits the dawn. Do we really expect better? In the long run (and in the short, as well), "September Dawn" won't amount to much. Mountain Meadows was a supreme tragedy, and I genuinely wish that all those responsible had been prosecuted. Such was not the case.

Narratives on Mountain Meadows long ago moved from appeals to justice to commentaries on the truth claims of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. So let's just be clear - this is not a quest for accurate historical fiction, but a polemic drawn on history. Ah, well... At least Al Sharpton will have a movie to attend in June! JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!

Why Al, Why now?

Al's visit got me thinking. Thinking about why he really came? Did he need to come? Did he want to come? Was he trying to minimize effect or offense? Or was he trying to gain the spotlight, did his comments get him exactly what he wanted?

Part of me wants to think that this is all an attempt to make amends for a mistake that was made, and the other part of me knows better. It is my hope that at the very least Al gained some knowledge by learning about the Mormon religion/church/faith/belief. But does that knowledge once learned force him to set aside what he already believes? The hard part for Al is that he needs to be two people (public Al and private Al); I just think that he got to comfortable and private Al's comments came out.

Which leads me to think why can't someone be different in his or her beliefs and not offend others by sharing those beliefs. Or why can’t public personalities just state that this is their private belief and call a spade a spade! Is it better to lie and try to cover up in halfhearted explanations and apologies (thanks Mel, Jimmy, Al etc... for the effort) but come on what is wrong with the good old-fashioned truth! What do you think?

As adults we must take responsibility for how we respond to our social environment and our home environment. For us to make mature choices we need to continually have an ongoing education, which, can be a professional one through classes or we can always be updating our reading and listening to information from many different sources. We must acquire critical thinking skills and so forth. As adults we are responsibile for children, who are limited by age and experience, to help them make choices and sometimes to make choices for them. Today in our society we cannot be a lackadaisical person, not for a minute. As a parent, grandparent, retired teacher and concerned citizen I know not all of the answers. I depend on many professional people for their expertise. I feel like whatever happened to Cho ( VT shooter) that made him think he was somehow solving his problems by what he did, that his message would make sense to us--I cannot fathom that it could be any single person's fault. He was part of this society where many folks observed him: public schools employees , medical people, relatives, friends, ministers and more. He was 23 and was very mentally sick. At this point, it is so diffulcult to comprend this horrindus thing, all I can think of is I have to strive to know what the right thing to do for my family and my community. My prayers are for all to be kind to one another, show compassion, be patient with one another. But do something, so such violence will stop. I believe we can do it!

Shame on us if we observe something or someone or feel like something should be done and we should speak out and we don't--no matter what the situation is. It is better to err on the side of caution.

It is very sad to see and hear all the tragic news on the loss of life, It is very very sad that a person would be able to walk and talk and people know that an individual has problems and cannot do anything about it. I find it hard to believe that this person who was known for mental issues was allowed to continue with the letters and in his deeds and actions. It is sad that this type of person could not have gotten help and or expulsion from a place of higher learning. It is very very sad to know that people are out there and things are mentioned but no actions taken. I am very sorry about the loss of life there is a deep sadness from so many and especially the families that have lost their children thinking their life ahead is going to be a great one. I am saying a rosary for each student that and faculity member that was lost and am saying another rosary for the families. the 33 that were lost I am sure the Lord welcomed them with open arms and knows that the person responsible is paying for this deed for all eternity. It is going to be bad for the person who did this tragic thing and is paying in hell fire for eternity think of that and know that the Lord takes revenge . laurel

--Was there any bullet damage to any place on the second floor, as described by eyewitnesses? Were any victims shot while they were on the second floor, as described by eyewitnesses?

--Can police claim that Talovic's fingerprints were on the weapon? Was a gunshot residue test done on his hands? Do the many witnesses who saw the gunman say it looked anything like Talovic? Did he or did he not have a mullet-style haircut? Why did some witnesses say the shooter was short and stocky, and looked older than an 18yr old?

--Was any 'dark'-colored trenchcoat found at the scene?

--What is the chain of possession of the weapons? Why does it take weeks to do a simple computer search of the registered serial numbers? Where did he get the ammo?

--Where did Talovic learn the technique of leaving a round in the chamber while reloading, according to an eyewitness, thus leaving himself covered in case anybody tried to jump him?

--Why can't the medical examiner release a simple description of what kind of shots killed which victims? Did any die because of pistol ammo? How many of them were hit with birdshot?

--What was the exact nature of that "nearby task force"? How many of the responders were part of this "nearby task force"?

--Why did Ogden police officer Ken Hammond travel 40 miles to celebrate Valentine's Day? Was he a part of the "nearby task force"? Where exactly did the bullets he fired end up?

--What was found in his car or his residence? And how many residences are we talking about? Mom and Dad weren't living together, and there was an early report of another apartment near the shopping center that Talovic stayed at. Why didn't they seize the computer at the mother's residence? Is it because they already knew Talovic didn't use that computer? What did they find at that other residence?

--What about that report from an eyewitness that he saw the gunman earlier that afternoon walking around the mall? It clearly conflicts with the report from his boss that Talolovic was at work till 5pm. Apparently glaring holes in the official version like this don't bother the investigators very much.

--What about Talovic's medical history? Was he on any medication at the time? Is there any truth to reports that Talovic was on the mean end of a serious pedestrian/vehicle accident several months before?

--Were exactly was Talovic in the hour between when he left home and when he showed up at the mall? What about a timeline for Talovic's life since entering high school until the shooting. He had to have been doing something for those years. Are we to believe that he ran home every night from work to be cooped up in that house until the next morning? I am not buying that one for a second.

--A neighbor reported cops at Talovic's house twice in the previous month. What exactly was that all about?

--What did mall security do during the shooting? Why haven't we heard from them? What about all the security cams around and in the mall?

--What was the motive? There is no such thing as a motiveless crime, according to the experts. And don't give me any of that "oh he was depressed, lonely, blah, blah, blah." Give me a real motive.

If the cops were serious about doing an investigation, most of these questions would have been answered by now. The investigators are simply using delaying tactics; when they release a report later on, they know their audience will have moved on to other headlines, and will have forgotten about the issues raised here.

ABC Reporters account?

I just watched the ABC reporter and her account of what happened last night and I was appalled at here obvious attempt to use this tragedy as a way to get her 15 min of fame. She told her story like it was a bedtime story! She sounded like she was thrilled that "she" was there. She should be fired, she is awful or she should not be allowed on camera. This is not a joke lady these are real people not characters in your story.

As a young mother and contributing member to society, I feel compelled to write about recent events occuring in Salt Lake City. These senseless and viscous acts of violence have pushed me to the point where I feel I have to do and say something. I refuse to accept that I have to go on living in fear. I refuse to think twice before running an errand with my child, for fear that a drunk teenager will hit and kill both of us. I refuse to be afraid of going to dinner with my family, in the event that some troubled teenager will decide to go on a shooting spree. People, we live in a scary time, but I am sick of being politically correct, so sensitive to the rights of others that I forfeit my own right for safety and peace of mind. I for one will no longer do it. I will take a stand. Unfortunately, many of these crimes are being committed by youth. The first step against preventing such horrific tragedies is up to parents. Wake up and be aware of what your children are doing, and of the choices they are making. Situations like this do not happen overnight. I challenge you to trash those video games that fade the line between fiction and reality. Are we really so surprised to see an incident like this when so many children, and even adults, are playing video games that glorify shooting, killing, and murdering? Maybe you call this censorship. Call it what you want, but I am not hesitant to recommend censoring violent video games when the expense is public safety. Innocent men, women and children have been murdered. If we aren’t going to put a stop to these evil games for them, then for who? For what? Parents, put your foot down on underage drinking. Maybe you know your kids are doing it, but want to be the “cool” parent. How “cool” will you be when your child hits and kills innocent people? Maybe you don’t think your child drinks enough to get drunk, but you never know when that time may happen. Again, I am sick of being an innocent bystander, afraid of going out in my own community. If others are going to destroy my right to feel that I can safely take my child out in public, then I am not afraid to do what I can to destroy their right to continue to live carelessly and viciously. Go to the game room and throw away the violent video games. Talk to your kids. Find out if they are sad, depressed, troubled, bullied, drinking, doing drugs, etc. This is not a time to be ashamed; this is a time to ask for help. Do whatever you can to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future. It’s time we start pushing back against those who have continued to push the envelope further and further. Join me.

    Excellent work, Terry. The proud display of principle, courage, integrity, serving in the public interest is ennobling and hopefully will be a clarion call for others in the main stream media. The response of the media to continual criticism of presenting only the “liberal” side of issues       (characterizing the newspapers in Utah as “libera,l” is the summit of all oxymoronic labels) has been perpetual and persistent self-emasculation until there is no content worth the descriptor “news.” How jarring to upset a television broadcast of hypnotic overly-dramatized recitation of the police blotter items and local fenderbenders with actual content of local importance.. How inopportune! Congratulations and cheers!!

    For those who do not oppose (un)Divine Strake here are a few thoughts:
•    The claim that these minuscule amounts of radiation are insufficient to cause harm are naive and incomplete. Exposure-dose-effect studies were done on populations previously unexposed to the DNA altering effects of ionizing radiation. The recognized air-borne trail of cancers and other medical maladies documented down wind from the original tests are only first generation effects. Other DNA alterations also occurred likely to produce more defects, problems or increased incidences of medical diseases in later generations. This already affected population will be more affected by subsequent exposures, even at lower doses. These dosing expectations are not accurately applicable to this population.
•    For more than 20 years, behind the current location of the medical library, the Medical College of the University of Utah, Department of Anatomy conducted a research program in conjunction with the then Atomic Energy Commission studying the effects of exposure to radiation by injecting a colony of Beagle dogs with varying doses of various radioactive compounds. The results were not pretty.
•    Although not nuclear testing, this proposed testing serves only to further a misguided plan to develop a new generation of atomic bombs. With the vast military superiority of the U.S. there is no military need to add a new nuclear arsenal. On a human level, it is inconceivable that the United States, after the unnecessary horror and long-term physical damage done to civilian Japanese citizens, would lose all common sense and pursue another nuclear program. Now that Rumsfeld has exited the DOD (but not the building, yet), perhaps convincing Congress to stop such development of such a program would be an effective way to stop the testing permanently.
•    Regarding the claim that these blasts will not put radioactive material in the air. There is inadequate science to support those statements. Theoretically they are thoroughly contaminated with multiple radioactive elements in various isotope configurations with half-lives lasting thousands of years. Considering the potential consequences, caution should be the most important guiding principle.

    Terry, I encourage you to step out of the box more often. Consider turning the evening and nightly news programs into television programs that contain actual news. The media no longer adequately fulfills it’s original mission needed in a democracy: to maintain an informed citizenry. Along that line, here is an OpEd I was unable to get published in our local newspapers. Perhaps it is time to debate this issue as well.

    NEWS OR JUST NEWSINESS: THE LEGACY OF MEDIA CONGLOMERATION

    "That news is important and that news matters is readily demonstrated in the adage that an informed electorate is necessary for the survival of a democracy.

    "Unfortunately, in broadcast television, both nationally and locally, news content has been lessened even though an overwhelming portion of the population acknowledges that television is their primary, if not only, source for news. A recent study has concluded that, although there are more news outlets, there is, overall, less news being delivered.

    "A few years ago the Federal Communication Commission relaxed restrictions, thus allowing media conglomerates to control even larger numbers of media outlets, primarily affecting broadcast outlets. In Utah three of the four major over-the-air broadcast television stations are now owned by these corporate mega-giants, the fourth is locally owned and controlled.

    "These conglomerate-owned network affiliates have scheduled additional thirty minute blocks of evening news. Ideally, that would increase the amount of news broadcast. Paradoxically, with more air time, the newsworthy content in these programs has not increased, but seems to have drastically diminished. Apparently events now considered to be air worthy are mostly fire and police response situations with an occasional human interest story.

    "This is a time when international events are roiling and rapidly approaching critical mass. Washington D.C., the epicenter of our government, is caught in a spasm repetitively belching mountains of newsworthy dramas. Some aspects of the recent Utah Legislature efforts warrant significant scrutiny. These are the events that shape all of our lives, permanently and indelibly.

    "Inconceivably, local television news directors consider the most appropriate and informative content to be motor vehicle accidents, out of state high speed car chases, residential drug busts, spiced up with incessant chattering back-and-forth banter about unrelated topics.

    "It is understandable that programming additional blocks of local evening news, by being less expensive to produce, can improve the financial bottom line. Unfortunately, this cost-cutting blitzkrieg severely overshot any reasonable mark and seemed to have eliminated the support system (or research staff) that directed actual news content into the 12 to 15 minutes of air time available for news (leaving time for weather and sports).

    "There have been occasions when the local reporting on each station has raised much needed concern and action. Other spots have provided public awareness of potential safety hazards on the market or financial scams preying on the innocent and/or elderly.

    "The benefits, accolades and awards for these occasional items do not excuse the routine daily elimination or downgrading of newsworthy items. These recognitions ably demonstrate that our local stations are capable of much better quality work product.

    "This BREAKING NEWS crap is becoming tiresome and annoying!   Just the fact that a fender-bender, drug bust, or even house fire is in progress does not qualify it as “breaking news.” How do our professional broadcast journalists keep a straight face when they deliver this hype?    Utah has matured beyond the point that these items can be routinely justified as the most appropriate material for informative news content in a broadcast.

    "Having missed an evening news or nightly news broadcast, I have never gone to bed wondering about car crashes, drug busts and out-of-state police car chases.   I have, however, wondered what happened in the world that might be important, effect my sensibilities or impact my life.

    "Although the ratings-grabbing philosophy of “if it bleeds, it leads” may be in operation, that pandering to the universal and primal hunger for gore and disaster does not grant permission to cannibalize the entire broadcast for a grand parade of more apparitions of the same caliber.

    "These “local” television stations are transmitting for free over airwaves owned by “we the people.” They seem to have forgotten that the founding and core principal of commercial broadcast television was that, in return for the free use of our airwaves, they would provide us with value and enlightenment in addition to entertainment.

    "Maintaining an informed electorate may not be easy, but it is important.

Test Divine Strake in Washington DC

They lied about it when I was a child and they still lie to me now that I am a grandmother.

I'm a down-winder survivor. Acute anemia, leukocytosis, female cancers, tumors, hypothyroid, etc., are what I deal with 24/7. Major health concerns are terrible, painful, and exhausting to me, my children, my doctors, and my finances.

Ashame on the people who want to keep killing our state.

Don't ruin Utah's parks -- Do the testing in Washington DC's parks or in NYs Cental Park or on an island like Martha's Vinyard. DON'T DO IT IN UTAH

Don't ruin the health of Utah's families -- Do the testing where the standing government has proven they don't care who lives or dies. I know that the US seems that way at times but I have hope that they do care about US citizens, so . . . do the testing someplace other than UTAH

Don't try to sell us another load of "radioactive" garbage about how safe it will be because WE KNOW DIFFERENT . . . our health proves it wrong and hazardous no matter what the US government and their cohorts tell us about the testing.

Cannon wants to wait for more information before he votes yes or no about the Divine Strake testing! Oh, hell no!

Look me up in your files with all of your “agencies” and you will find that I have a history of abject contempt for every Republican president (except Mr. Gerald Ford…) in my own lifetime…Big Whoop- lots of people don’t like you…And so it is with every president who’s ever been elected (appointed in your case…)… The point is that I don’t like you (Draft-Dodger, Frat-boy, Yalie, Christian, Oil Speculator, and worst of all, dig this- Cheerleader!…Come on!- what kind of “Texan” is a Cheerleader?...) or Rove ( a Utahn, incidentally- presumed gay…not that there’s anything wrong with that…), or Orrin Hatch (carpetbagger…), and I would be a liar if I offered you anything I could give to change your opinion or policy on the Divine Strake test scheduled in Nevada in the increasingly approaching future.

So all I can do is beg- beg that you do not allow this test at all, but barring that option, I beg that you hold the test in any of a thousand places besides the one that’s been decided upon. We in Utah and Nevada have paid enough. We have given enough to the various paranoid causes and madness. Our entire state seems cancerous….WE have to constantly remind ourselves of the nuclear testing perpetrated on us in the Cold War years, and bite our tongues at the insult of having been described by the National Government as a “Low-Use Segment” of the population…Do not these insults alone grant us immunity from further slow painful murder on your part?...Are New Yorkers any more able to cope with what has been inflicted on us?...or Oregonians?...how about San Franciscans- You hate that city anyway, let them have Divine Strake, We In Utah ( …well not “we”- I will never vote for you- as noted…) have, for some time been as good a friend to you and Republicans in general as you could ask for- is another round of federally sanctioned domestic bombings how we are to be repaid for our loyalty?...

Please send whatever thugs you see fit to my home and not my place of employment, as they are not a party to this opinion, and don’t deserve the attention that I might cause them. History has taught us about the commitment and the will of terrorists. We can believe our leaders when they tell us that radical Islam will strike us again. I am pleased that America has confronted them and is prepared to use our technology to kill these insects where they hide. As they hide in underground bunkers we must develop the technology that can bury them there. This posture seems harsh and ugly. The business of making war to protect our nation is a harsh and ugly business. This business deserves our careful attention, something we owe to all those who have sacrificed for our freedom. Most of us in this middle age generation have been taught to believe those things learned in school, to believe those things from the media, politicians, and government represntatives. History has now proven that not all things should have been believed, nor should they now be believed.

How can our military give us assurances that the largest test performed in the southern desert will not cause damage, when there are irrefutable cases, in the thousands, of all those poor souls who have suffered cancer and related illnesses tied to the earlier nuclear testing.

Did president Bush find nuclear weapons? Did he withdraw from Iraq after Hussein was captured? Our government and those officials in charge do not always have the public's best interest at heart and I fear this most recent test proposal will once again go down in history as being a deliberate attempt to circumvent the rights of the people by feeding us false information and giving us false promises of protection or lack of damage. There is no rational or reasonable basis for this nuclear test to go forward and be conducted.

I would like to voice my opinion on not allowing the government to perform these tests in our backyards. I don't want any of the pollution in my backyard effecting my family and children. I oppose it and don't think it's work the risks.

Please say no to divinestrake I wouldn't want any family to have to bury family members like my family has. I can't even believe that it is even being considered but I geuss if it doesn't happen directly to you it's easy to dismiss. This message is on behalf of my Grandfather Lawrence Barnes who cannot post this himself because he passed from cancer two years ago and my grandmother who has survived two different forms of cancer.

I live in Cedar City, ex military spouse for 15+ years and prior to that dated guys from NAFB as I grew up in Las Vegas. Up until the early 80's, the Radar Techs I dated use to frequent the zone where they plan on testing this bomb. The radiation level was way to high for them then to even consider going into those fields unprotected. Again this was as late as early 82 and even later. I have no info after that period since I moved out of state, however, if the radiation was that hihg then when they supposedly stopped bombing years before, their is no way its cleared up by now. A couple of my other friends that we out there on the test site ended up with Cancer and others in Psych wards do to the mental stuff the military did to them dealing with that area. I am so dead serious about this. In 81 all military personal were wearing radiation suits and when told to go out in the radioactive air without, the guys freaked out. Wouldn't you if you knew something was dangerous out there and you could keep from getting sick by putting on a simple suit and just because the military stated it was safe and the meters state otherwise? your not going to feel safe, trust the government or ....well...you can imagine how you would feel. Now after seeing that along with being a military spouse for as long as I have been and also working at the Pentagon, you see way to much to believe them anymore.
Yes, I worked there along with my ex(Techcomm,converting to S.A.M) until early 98 when my ex decided to leave after hearing way to much between the Pentagon and other heads of the bases along with stuff dealing with similar stuff to this. Stuff he can't and will not talk to anyone about but knowing he seperated versus staying the last few years to retirement tells you something eh?

Ahh ok....... where all the different militaries finally come together and share military intell. To prevent the another Pearl Harbor where one military knew what was coming but because the militaries didn't talk to each other.. they didn't warn the Navy ahead of time to prevent all the deaths.
I hope I was able to clear that up a bit.
So please don't be nieve and listen to them about safe levels of Radiation.. Stop them ASAP!!

BTW, I do not see any high ranking officers, officials or even the President living or standing downwind of the zone. Uhhh that should tell ya something. Take it to their back yard instead.
