Terry Wood's editorial on Divine Strake

When Darwin Morgan, the Department of Energy spokesman accuses ABC 4 of “advocacy journalism”, he is right.

Objectivity is the goal of a good, professional journalist, and for months, ABC 4 has reported objectively on Divine Strake.

But after looking at the facts, ABC 4 has taken a determined stand in opposition.

This is my 40th year as a broadcast journalist. 30 of those years I’ve spent here in Utah, and I have never taken a position of advocacy before.

But more than a professional journalist, I am a citizen of Utah. My children live in Utah. My grandchildren live in Utah, as do those of the ABC  4 staff.

By the government’s own admission, the mushroom cloud from Divine Strake will pass over Utah.

The Dept. of Energy says it will not harm us, but we have heard that before in Utah.  Their promises that the fallout from the atom bomb tests would not hurt us were either out-and-out lies or naively stupid.

I, too, am willing to put my professional reputation and career of 40 years on the line in taking a stand against Divine Strake.  It is that important to the health and well-being of our families.

I am not willing to obediently accept the Dept. of Energy's assurance that it will not cause us harm in the years to come.  They may be right, but I do not want to take the chance.

Obviously, more than 7-thousand of you feel that way, too.

I think you did a disservice to professional journalism with your emotional commentary last night.  It is commendable to be concerned about potentially lethal health effects from the Divine Strake testing; however there is little or no scientific evidence to support the assertion that low-level fallout has adversely affected the health of people downwind.  Check the studies.  Scientists aren't even sure if there is a connection between low-level exposure to Iodine 131 and thyroid disorders, which is the most studied of the possible health problems.  Studies have shown that people all over the United States received similar doses to the so-called "downwinders" and the statistical analysis doesn't show a significant increase in cancers.

Dismissing factual support for your emotionally charged claims by invoking the "they may be right, but I don't want to take the chance" clause is disingenuous.  If you apply that same reasoning to, say, eating lots of carrots or drinking lots of milk, you sound silly; but in fact we receive doses of low-level radiation from consuming those things too, which MIGHT have a long-term ill effect (but we don't know because it hasn't been proven).  Every day we ingest and are bombarded by doses of low-level radiation and no one has yet shown a clear correlation to adverse health conditions.

All the information that shows a conclusive link between health and radiation exposure is for victims of DIRECT exposure from the initial blast of an atomic weapon or from a leaking nuclear vessel.  Despite the hysteria, there has yet to be shown any conclusive evidence for deleterious effects from exposure to fallout or low-level radiation from nuclear testing or nuclear accidents.

Contrary to the mass paranoia propogated for half a century now, nuclear technology is clean, efficient and safe.  We should be promoting it, not dismissing it because of unfounded fears.

Terry Wood and all the other bloggers are all nothing more than Huntsman political Lemmings - crying about something they have not even taken the time to research.  A quick news story tristed to catch the attention of people and to scare them for ratings - you all make me sick!  This bomb IS NOT A NUCLEAR bomb!!!  It is a large pile of explosives placed to SIMULATE a nuclear bomb.  Its purpose is to help our scientists learn what type of minimum sized bomb can take out our enemies targets that are hidden in underground bunkers.  Bunkers that could hold WMDs, command, and communication or just our good friends Al-Quada!!!
The tunnel complex they have build to test this bomb is 8 miles from any of the previous 1950s era nuclear tests - so you will not be throwing up old radioactive fallout into the air.  Come on people - don't be Lemmings!!!!

From all of us at StopDivineStrake.com, we want to extend our sincere gratitude
to Terry Wood for his historic and courageous commentary that was aired on your
10pm newshour yesterday evening.

In our eyes, Terry Wood has joined the ranks of other honorable Utahns, such
as Rep. Jim Matheson, who tirelessly fight for the right of residents of the
Beehive State to never again have to live through the fear, the lies and the
health consequences of radioactive fallout from military testing.

We applaud ABC4's stance on Divine Strake.

First of all let me just say "good for you."  I was very touched and moved by your commentary tonight.  I am so glad to see someone who is very well respected in the community take such a strong stand on something as dangerous as divine strake.  I currently live in Wyoming but I grew up in Utah.  Like many Utahns I have several family members who were downwinders.  I grew up hearing about the horrible things that my family (and many others) had to suffer through because of the government's inexperience, lies, and stupidity.  I missed the deadline to oppose divine strake and figured that since I don't actually live in Utah it might not do me any good to oppose anyway.  But I just wanted you to know that I truly do appreciate your comments.  I think Divine Strake is something that needs to be stopped.  Keep up the excellent work!!

I want to lend my voice of support for the strong stance that Terry Wood took tonight on the Divine Strake issue. As a graduate of broadcast journalism at BYU, I am very familiar with the desire to stay objective, but I also recognize the power and obligation that exists when journalists have the ability to play a role in bettering the world in which we live.

I was incredibly impressed and moved to see Mr. Wood potentially put his reputation as an objective reporter on the line in order to keep our families safe here in Utah. If any dissenting voices come because of this, send them my way.

I just barely watched your "speech" about your opposition to the Divine Strake nuclear testing in Nevada.  I have wracked my brain for the vernacular to describe my feelings on it, and though I did major in English, I can only describe it as follows: it was, without a doubt, the most badass, hardcore, awesomest thing I have ever seen.  Journalists are supposed to be, above all, objective and unbiased, and for you to take such a risk with your career to promote your personal feelings about such an important issue was both audacious and powerful.  I want to thank you for that.

We are very proud that ABC4 supported Terry Wood's decision to speak out after investigating the facts on Divine Strake.

We are proud of Terry Wood for speaking out with so much passion on such a critical issue. I think Terry has great integrity
and it is important to teach our community when not to have blind obedience.

Thank you for your bravery and know I am a more loyal viewer today then yesterday.

I couldn't care less whether or not your anchors are from Utah, their profession is meant to be objective. Now I know that reality is not the ideal, but when news anchors take pride in their objectivity and therefore we should forget when they are not, then the news is not being honest.

The dictionary defines integrity as: the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards.  In taking a stand against the Divine Strake, ABC 4 has not only maintained its integrity but enhanced it.

Thank you for giving a voice to your listeners.  My children and I sent you our petitions.  My 14 year-old’s comments said it all, "this is lame".  Thank you also for hand delivering petitions.

I have a new respect for ABC 4 and your news team.  I though you were good but now I think you are great.

Thank you Channel 4 for allowing Terry to voice "our" concern in such a forum.

Thank you so much and keep up the great work.

I was extremely disappointed to see KTVX, as an organization, and Terry Wood as “the point of the spear” take a biased and opinionated position on the proposed “Divine Strake” test.  Each American has a basic right to express his/her opinion, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  But the press has arrogated unto itself, at least for the last fifty years, a high standard of objectivity and independence.  Reporting, not shaping the news.  Enter the new age of advocacy journalism.  It’s patently clear that KTVX has no intention of examining whatever data the federal government may present.  No, Mr. Woods actually trumpeted his right of advocacy and emotionalism in his editorial rant.  This permanently disqualifies him to report on any policy-related issue in the future, and calls into serious question the ethics of his reporting in the past.

-L. Minert
**********************

I saw Terry Wood's commentary on Wednesday night about being against "Divine" Strake.  I've never seen anything quite like that on the news.  I just want to say that he impressed me greatly with his convictions on this issue and I'm REALLY glad he spoke out against this thing.  I realize that as a news caster, this is anything but standard operating procedure, but I just want to thank him for taking such a risk.  Obviously he realizes how important it is to get word out about this and STOP it!

Terry Wood is right.

I am proof.  His warning, if ignored, will not only set this state back but the whole USA back to the 60s where my "proof" began.

All you polititcal guys can get really close to the testing, oh, and take your kids with ya.  Make a day of it.  Picnic lunch, BBQ, fun in the sun . . . oops; no sun just a mushroom cloud with your kid's name on it.

Good luck to those who think Wood's statement is political.
It is a humanitarian and true statement.

Mr. Wood,

I just watched the clip from your delivery of the petitions to the Department of Energy in Las Vegas, and the following commentary. I am moved to tears. Thank you for your courageous actions and statements.

There are times when the thorough gathering of unbiased information does lead one to certain undeniable conclusions, and when the conclusions reveal abuse of power or eminent danger, it is the responsibility of a journalist to inform the public.

It is not biased to care about the welfare of our progeny and our community.

Call it commentary, if you must, though I think of it as thorough coverage of events that effect our lives.

Thank you for being an outstanding journalist.

Thank you for your willingness to embrace their attempt to discredit you and transform it into a Shining Light.

These days...
with The American Enterprise Institute using Exxon money to try to buy off scientists to attack the new UN report on global warming...
with brave responders to the 9/11 WTC site dying and suffering from breathing the air they were told was safe...
with the revelation of billions of dollars wasted on over-charged, poorly or never fulfilled private contracts in Iraq...
with the Pentagon Inspector General reporting that Douglas Feith and his select group at The Office of Special Plans manipulated the intelligence to rationalize turning the United States into a first-strike invader and occupier (almost four years after Seymour Hersh thoroughly reported on the intelligence-cherrypicking of the Office of Special Plans in the May 12, 2003 issue of Vanity Fair)...
And with Iran being set up to be the next target of the Bush administration...

We cannot afford to not pay attention and trust that all will be well.

I will be forwarding the video clip extensively.
