Its that hot time of year, when the temperatures reach triple digits, and the action heats up over at the Rocky Mountain Revue. Okay, maybe it doesn't heat up that much over at the SLCC Gymnasium. In fact, the place is mostly empty for any non-Jazz game. But its a nice way to break up the summer, a notoriously slow time in sports, especially for those of us without a MLB team.
My favorite part of the RMR is watching the new rookies take to the court. Even the best players look just a little bit lost. They aren't sure if they are supposed to ballhog like they did in college, or share the ball and risk getting lost in the shuffle. Here are some of my favorite summer-league players over the past few years:
1. Greg Ostertag. I read somewhere that Tag dominated Tim Duncan in TD's first pro game. I would need to see the tape to believe it. But since it makes for a classic Urban-Legend, we'll throw Tag on the list.
2. Zach Randolph. This guy has been dominant for as long as I can remember. But early on, he never made it on to the court for the real games, so we got to see him dominate at SLCC.
3. Qyntell Woods. Easily the greatest player ever...to hit the courts in Salt Lake...out of Northeast Mississippi Community College...to later get arrested for dogfighting.
4. Marvin Williams. After a dismal rookie season, Williams came to SLCC last year looking to score a bunch of points, and he did so. Williams showed why he was drafted way too high, by torching the summer-league competition. He still may be a decent NBA player, and we saw just how good he could be.
5. DeShawn Stevenson. Jerry Sloan never really came around on DeShawn. But Jazz fans were infatuated with him after his first wicked summer league dunk. He dazzled the crowds at SLCC for three or four years before leaving for Orlando via trade.
Honorable Mention: Britton Johnsen. The former Ute will forever be remembered(by me anyways) for taking on LeBron James in LBJ's first pro game. Britton threw down a nasty dunk right on LeBron's face that won't soon forgotter, by me.
