In Thursday's NBA Draft, after round one and all the glory hounds, we get down to the nitty-gritty. The second round is filled with guys who can play, but might not even make an NBA roster. There are no guaranteed contracts for these dudes. This year the Utah Jazz don't have a pick until late in round two, so we had to dig deep in the archives to find some selections. Remember one of the names I suggested last year: Paul Milsap. So, here are some guys I think the Jazz should take:
Trey Johnson(SG) - Jackson State
Instead of trying to find a shooter for the 2-spot in the offense, why not look for a scorer instead. Johnson averaged 27 points per game for Jackson State. He has NBA size at 6'6", and he can light it up. Gil Arenas slipped to round two, could Johnson be that kind of talent?
Jermareo Davidson(PF) - Alabama
All right, I know the Jazz probably won't bring in a power forward to compete with the Boozer/Memo/Milsap trifecta. But if they do, Davidson would be a good call. He's 6'11" with long arms, and is more of a defensive specalist and shot blocker. I don't know if Utah is seriously considering a trade for AK, but if they are, they'll need a new shot blocker.
Chris Richard(C) - Florida
He's undersized as a 6'11" center, but Richard was impressive in the NCAA tournament. He's another guy who will block some shots, grab some boards, and doesn't need to shoot a bunch to be happy.
Marko Tomas(SG) - Croatia
This guy was a hot prospect until he signed with Real Madrid in 2005. He's a 6'8" swingman with slick offensive skills. He can shoot and he can handle. The only real negative against him is his contract with Real. But that could work out well for the Jazz: Since they don't have much roster space for him, they could leave him in Spain for a couple years of seasoning. Or perhaps, Larry H. Miller could have his buddy Dave Checketts make a call for him. Checketts is close with the Real Madrid Futbol team, and maybe he could put in a good word. Just a thought.
