I understand BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose suspending Rashaun Broadus for the rest of the season for his DUI. That harsh of a suspension may not have happened at any other university in the entire country other than BYU, but Broadus knew the rules, and broke them. Take away his last year of eligibility...but if he is truly contrite and repentent, don't take away his chance to graduate.
Broadus was just a few units short of earning a degree from one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. Should all his hard work be thrown away for one mistake? I understand the Honor Code is strict and essential at a school like BYU, but why punish him for the rest of his life? Broadus was not going to play in the NBA, and he probably wasn't going to get a job playing professionally anywhere. But a degree from BYU would almost guarantee him a job he could turn parlay into a pretty productive life.
All this is contingent on Broadus truly being sorry and responsible for his actions. He absolutely needs to go to all the court-appointed alcohol and drunk driving classes the judge deems necessary. He should also have his license taken away for whatever the law requires. But if he willingly accepts responsibility for his obviously poor choice, Broadus should still be given the opporunity to move on with his life with a college degree.
