Spiral Notes

By Jeremy Brunner

Last week: 8-8(50%)

Season total: 90-54(63%)

Against-the-spread: 5-11(31%)

Season ATS: 75-64-3(54%)

Lock-of-the-week: 8-4(67%)

I overheard someone say that this NFL weekend was a good one for fans, but a bad one for gamblers. That was very true in my case. I lost the lock and went a pitiful 5-11 against the number. I fully expect to bounce back this week, since there's no Duchesne on the schedule to throw me off.

Pittsburgh(3-6) at Cleveland(3-6)

The Browns have proven to be one of the spunkiest bad teams in the league. Meanwhile the Steelers are finally on a roll. They may be 3-and-6, but would it even surprise you a little bit if they made the playoffs. This is a team that was 5-and-5 last year, before winning their final 10 games, including the Super Bowl. Steelers 23, Browns 21

Oakland(2-7) at Kansas City(5-4)

Oakland has shown they are another spunky bad team. This game will be a big deal for Trent Green. He is starting for the Chiefs for the first time since his week one TKO. In a close one, Chefs 30, Raiders 28

Cincinnati(4-5) at New Orleans(6-3)

Speaking of tough teams to figure out, how 'bout them Bengals? They blew a huge lead last week, and have shown all the backbone of a jellyfish. The Saints just aren't that good. But they are very good when they get to play in New Orleans. Saints 40, Bengals 23

Tennessee(2-7) at Philadelphia(5-4)

Vince Young seems to have the Titans in games almost every week. The Eagles are fading fast, and can't afford to lose any winnable games. Eagles 13, Titans 3

St. Louis(4-5) at Carolina(5-4)

While the Rams are fading, the Panthers are finally coming on. Steve Smith will be the difference. Panthers 20, Rams 12

Buffalo(3-6) at Houston(3-6)

David Carr fights for his job. He wins, for now. Texans 36, Bills 29

Seattle(6-3) at San Francisco(4-5)

Alex Smith keeps improving, and the Niners have already beaten their win total from last year. While the Seahawks keep manufacturing wins, in games they really should lose. Hawks 33, Niners 20

New England(6-3) at Green Bay(4-5)

Brett Favre is back. He may just be good enough to come back next year. I don't care how long he stays, as long as he passes Marino. Tom Brady is having a bad year, but he is still the master of doing just enough to win games. Pats 21, Pack 19

Minnesota(4-5) at Miami(3-6)

Phish on a roll, Dana Greene is stoked. Phins 22, Vikes 21

Chicago(8-1) at NY Jets(5-4)

The Bears won their huge showdown with that other New York team last week. Now they get the Jets, a team that is in the middle of a playoff race. Bears 16, Jets 14

Washington(3-6) at Tampa Bay(2-7)

Would be Toilet Bowl, if not for Detroit vs. Arizona. Buccs 37, Washington 31

Atlanta(5-4) at Baltimore(7-2)

Mike Vick never does well against great defenses. Its my take-it-to-Wendover-lock-of-the-week: Ravens 29, Falcons 8

Detroit(2-7) at Arizona(1-8)

Worst. Game. Ever. Upset Special #1: Loins 20, Cards 18

Indianapolis(9-0) at Dallas(5-4)

This game is why the Cowboys signed Terrell Owens. He has the ability to win a game like this on his own. Just not this time. The Colts stay undefeated on the road. Well, everywhere. Colts 31, Cowboys 25

San Diego(7-2) at Denver(7-2)

Even Broncos stellar "D" can't stop L.T. Upset special #2: Bolts 30, Broncs 28

NY Giants(6-3) at Jacksonville(5-4)

Good game on Monday nite. Giants bounce back. Upset Special #3: Giants 31, Jags 28(OT)
